Welcome to Meta
Hi there and welcome to the first edition of Meta - an exploration of creativity.
Last year we launched the Blackbird Foundation to unleash creativity in as many young people as possible. We believe that creativity is the metaskill that makes it possible to learn just about anything. Every one of us is creative but unfortunately, our creativity isn’t nurtured and as a consequence, our full potential is often not realised.
If you want to learn more about the Blackbird Foundation and how we will achieve our mission, head on over to blackbird.foundation.
I’ve started this newsletter to share some of our ideas around creativity, highlight interesting stories I come across, and over time build a community of people who believe, as I do, that creativity is the metaskill that makes eerything else possible. If you have anything you’d like me to cover, have feedback to share or just want to rap about creativity, hit reply!
Creativity is the meta-skill
A meta-skill is a higher order skill that makes learning functional skills easier. For example; learning how to tell stories will mean you can pitch, go for job interviews, do stand up comedy and much more. Some other potential meta skills might include Resilience or Self Awareness. I believe Creativity sits on top of every other meta skill you could come up with. Through creativity, a person can become a life-long learner, comfortable with ambiguity, adaptive and so much more. Unlocking creativity makes everything else possible.

Sir Ken Robinson was a visionary and global leader in education and the arts. He passed away last year but his legacy lives on. Inspired by Sir Ken, Imagine if… will be an annual celebration of human potential taking place during the first week of March. If you want to get involved, head on over to his website.
The United Nations has declared 2021 the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development, Creativity, Culture & Capital. What’s that mean? The creative sector is a key driver of inclusive and sustainable growth as the world considers recovery from COVID. Great!
Creativity Culture Capital just launched with over 44 essays on the impact of the creative sector. It’s a call to arms for Impact Investors to start considering the creative sector for investment. I’m still working through the essays, but highlights include “Creativity at work: Creative solutions for impact returns”, “The forms of things unknown: Technology and the future of theatre” and “Culture as a driver for development in the City of Buenos Aires”
Board game retail store CAMP was designed to be a kids paradise. Over the years, and especially during COVID, most of their sales have been moving online. Read about their plans to convert their stores to gathering places built for community and magic.
Know anyone working on unleashing creativity? Send them this newsletter. I’m hoping to get a community of professionals going. Now’s the time to be doing this work and I want to meet anyone who is in the game.
